A sari or saree,[note 1] is a South Asian female garment [1] that consists of drape varying from two to nine yards in length [2] and two to four feet in breadth[3] that is

typically wrapped around the waist, with one end draped over the shoulder, baring the midriff.[4][5][6]
The sari is usually worn over a petticoat (called lahaṅgā or lehenga in the north; langa in Kannada, pavada, or pavadai in the south; chaniyo, parkar, ghaghra, or

ghagaro in the west; and shaya in eastern India), with a blouse known as a choli or ravika forming the upper garment. The blouse has short sleeves and a low neck

and is usually cropped at the midriff, and as such is particularly well-suited for wear in the sultry South Asian summers. Cholis may be backless or of a halter neck

style. These are usually more dressy, with plenty of embellishments such as mirrors or embroidery, and may be worn on special occasions. Women in the armed

forces, when wearing a sari uniform, don a short-sleeved shirt tucked in at the waist. The sari signifies the grace of Indian women adequately displaying the curves at

the right places.[7] The sari is widely regarded as a symbol of Indian culture.[8]
The word sari is derived from Sanskrit शाटी śāṭī[9] which means 'strip of cloth'[10] and शाडी śāḍī or साडी sāḍī in Prakrit, and which was corrupted to sāṛī in Hindi.[11]

The word 'Sattika' is mentioned as describing women's attire in ancient India in Buddhist Jain literature called Jatakas.[12] This could be equivalent to modern day

'Sari'.[12] The term for female bodice, the choli is derived from another ruling clan from ancient Tamil Nadu, the Cholas.[13] Rajatarangini (meaning the 'river of

kings'), a tenth-century literary work by Kalhana, states that the Choli from the Deccan was introduced under the royal order in Kashmir.[13] The concept of Pallava,

the end piece in the sari, originated during the Pallavas period and named after the Pallavas, another ruling clan of Ancient Tamilakam.[13]
Origins and history[edit]

Noblewoman in Mysore Sari
The word sari is derived from Sanskrit शाटी śāṭī[9] which means 'strip of cloth'[10] and शाडी śāḍī or साडी sāḍī in Prakrit, and which was corrupted to sāṛī in Hindi.[11]

The word 'Sattika' is mentioned as describing women's attire in ancient India in Buddhist Jain literature called Jatakas.[12] This could be equivalent to modern day

'Sari'.[12]
In the history of Indian clothing the sari is traced back to the Indus Valley Civilisation, which flourished during 2800–1800 BC around the western part of the Indian

subcontinent.[4][5][6] The earliest known depiction of the sari in the Indian subcontinent is the statue of an Indus Valley priest wearing a drape.[4][5][6]
Ancient Tamil poetry, such as the Silappadhikaram and the Sanskrit work, Kadambari by Banabhatta, describes women in exquisite drapery or sari.[14] The ancient

stone inscription from Gangaikonda Cholapuram in old Tamil scripts has a reference to hand weaving.[13] In ancient Indian tradition and the Natya Shastra (an ancient

Indian treatise describing ancient dance and costumes), the navel of the Supreme Being is considered to be the source of life and creativity, hence the midriff is to

be left bare by the sari.[15][16]
Sculptures from the Gandhara, Mathura and Gupta schools (1st–6th century AD) show goddesses and dancers wearing what appears to be a dhoti wrap, in the

"fishtail" version which covers the legs loosely and then flows into a long, decorative drape in front of the legs. No bodices are shown.[4]
Other sources say that everyday costume consisted of a dhoti or lungi (sarong), combined with a breast band called 'Kurpasika' or 'Stanapatta' and occasionally a

wrap called 'Uttariya' that could at times be used to cover the upper body or head.[12] The two-piece Kerala mundum neryathum (mundu, a dhoti or sarong, neryath,

a shawl, in Malayalam) is a survival of ancient Indian clothing styles. The one-piece sari is a modern innovation, created by combining the two pieces of the mundum

neryathum.[5][6][17]
It is generally accepted that wrapped sari-like garments for lower body and sometimes shawls or scarf like garment called 'uttariya' for upper body, have been worn

by Indian women for a long time, and that they have been worn in their current form for hundreds of years. In ancient couture the lower garment was called 'nivi' or

'nivi bandha', while the upper body was mostly left bare.[12] The works of Kalidasa mentions 'Kurpasika' a form of tight fitting breast band that simply covered the

breasts.[12] It was also sometimes referred to as 'Uttarasanga' or 'Stanapatta'.[12]
The tightly fitted, short blouse worn under a sari is a choli. Choli evolved as a form of clothing in the 10th century AD, and the first cholis were only front covering; the

back was always bare but covered with end of saris pallu. Bodices of this type are still common in the state of Rajasthan.[18]
In South India and especially in Kerala, women from most communities wore only the sari and exposed the upper part of the body till the middle of the 20th century.

[5][6] Poetic references from works like Silappadikaram indicate that during the Sangam period in ancient Tamil Nadu, a single piece of clothing served as both

lower garment and head covering, leaving the midriff completely uncovered.[14] Similar styles of the sari are recorded paintings by Raja Ravi Varma in Kerala. By

the mid 19th century, though, bare breasted styles of the sari faced social revaluation and led to the Upper cloth controversy in the princely state of Travancore (now

part of the state of Kerala) and the styles declined rapidly within the next half a century.
In ancient India, although women wore saris that bared the midriff, the Dharmasastra writers stated that women should be dressed such that the navel would never

become visible.[19][20] By which for some time the navel exposure became a taboo and the navel was concealed.[21]

Wallpaper (also desktop picture and desktop background) is an image used as a background of a graphical user interface on a computer screen or mobile

communications device. On a computer it is usually for the desktop, while for a mobile phone it is usually the background for the 'home' or 'idle' screen. Though

most devices comes with a default picture, users can usually change it to files of their choosing.[1]
"Wallpaper" is the term used in Microsoft Windows before Windows Vista (where it is called the Desktop "Background"), while Mac OS X calls it a "desktop picture"

(previously, the term desktop pattern was used to refer to a small pattern that was repeated to fill the screen).

History[edit]

Original computer wallpaper pattern, as used in Xerox's Officetalk and Star
The X Window System was one of the earliest systems to include support for an arbitrary image as wallpaper via the xsetroot program, which at least as early as the

X10R3 release in 1985 could tile the screen with any solid color or any binary-image X BitMap file.[2] In 1989, a free software program called xgifroot was released

that allowed an arbitrary color GIF image to be used as wallpaper,[3] and in the same year the free xloadimage program was released which could display a variety

of image formats (including color images in Sun Rasterfile format) as the desktop background.[4] Subsequently a number of programs were released that added

wallpaper support for additional image formats and other features, such as the xpmroot program (released in 1993 as part of fvwm[5]) and the xv software (released

in 1994).
The original Macintosh operating system only allowed a selection of 8×8-pixel binary-image tiled patterns; the ability to use small color patterns was added in

System 5 in 1987.[6] MacOS 8 in 1997 was the first Macintosh version to include built-in support for using arbitrary images as desktop pictures, rather than small

repeating patterns.[7]
Windows 3.0 in 1990 was the first version of Microsoft Windows to come with support for wallpaper customization, and used the term "wallpaper" for this feature.[8]

Although Windows 3.0 only came with 7 small patterns (2 black-and-white and 5 16-color), the user could supply other images in the BMP file format with up to 8-bit

color (although the system was theoretically capable of handling 24-bit color images, it did so by dithering them to an 8-bit palette).[9] In the same year, third-party

freeware was available for the Macintosh[10] and OS/2[11] to provide similar wallpaper features otherwise lacking in those systems. A wallpaper feature was added

in a beta release of OS/2 2.0 in 1991.[12]
Live wallpaper[edit]

Keeny creek waterfall in West Virginia, USA
A 'live wallpaper' is a type of application that works on a mobile device using the Android operating system. The application works as a wallpaper – providing the

background image for the home screen—but also works as a conventional application since it can provide user-interaction with the touch screen (allowing the image

to change dynamically, for example) and access other hardware and software features within the device (accelerometer, GPS, network access, etc.).[13]
Similar functionality could be found in the Active Desktop feature of Windows 98 and later versions. There is also third party software that provides this feature for

various operating systems.
Dynamic backgrounds[edit]

In OS X[edit]
OS X has built-in support, via the Desktop & Screen Saver panel in its System Preferences, for cycling through a folder collection of images on a timed interval or

when logging in or waking from sleep.
Additionally, OS X has the native ability to run a screen saver on the desktop; in this configuration, the screen saver appears beneath the desktop icons in place of

the system wallpaper. However, OS X does not come with a built-in interface to do this; it must be done through Terminal commands or various third-party

applications.[14]
In Windows 7[edit]
Similarly, Windows 7 can also be set to cycle through pictures from a folder at regular intervals. If fully animated backgrounds are wanted, third party software would

need to be installed, such as BioniX Wallpaper Changer, Adolix or others.
In GNOME[edit]
GNOME 2 also can be set to cycle through pictures from a folder at regular intervals, similarly to Windows 7.
In KDE 4[edit]
KDE 4 provides this feature as well (slideshow).
In Enlightenment[edit]
Enlightenment v17 supports image sequences, animated and interactive desktop backgrounds in its default configuration.
In iOS 7[edit]
Dynamically animated backgrounds have also been introduced in the latest version of iOS.
Other systems or window managers[edit]
For other systems, a third party software is required[15] (* in development).
